The Thalidomide Society (Honorary Treasurer)
The Thalidomide Society was set up by parents of thalidomide impaired children in the early 60s to support, help and to work them to enable them to live fulfilling and independent lives. Thalidomide impaired people are now nearing their half century and are keen to pass on their accumulated knowledge, experience and expertise to other families with children or adults with similar impairments
The post they are looking to fill is that of Honorary Treasurer. The Treasurer is appointed by the Board of Trustees and will deal with the general financial payments for the Society including expense claims, invoices etc. The Treasurer will also oversee the bank accounts and review the statement of account provided by the Society's investment managers HSBC. The trustees have a designated Finance Working Party of which the Treasurer would be the lead member. The role also includes liaising with the Society's auditors and notifying the Company Secretary of salary payments etc. which are all made via electronic banking; the payroll is handled by the Society's accountants Hillier Hopkins LLP.
It is hoped the candidate would have some financial/accounting experience and awareness of investment procedures. The current board has 7 members, 5 of whom have thalidomide impairments and three of whom are wheelchair users. The board's current priorities are to encourage membership amongst the thalidomide community, to pass on the accumulated knowledge and experience to other groups with similar disabilities and to prepare for the 'Thalidomide at 50 - 2012 Project' in May 2012. It is hoped that the Treasurer would act as ex-officio for this project. The Treasurer also works closely with the Company Secretary who can provide information on the issues facing this unique cohort of people. The Society has members who are parents as well as individual thalidomiders and their partners and children.
The Society holds an annual conference in March where issues which are immediately relevant to members and to the wider disability community are discussed. We have had a wide range of keynote speakers who are members of parliament, chief executives of disability organisations, pharmaceutical companies, professionals in the complementary therapies field and speakers from other European and transatlantic thalidomide organisations. Their Annual General Meeting is also held at that time.
The "Thalidomide at 50-2012' Project which is currently being planned will coincide with the 50 years of government warning about thalidomide which was given in 1962. This event will take place in London in May 2012 and will both celebrate the achievements of thalidomide impaired people and their parents and honour and commemorate those who have died and those whose deaths were never officially recorded.
They also have a regular newsletter for members updating them on Society events. The Society is also hoping to encourage other organisations working with children or adults with dysmelia ( congenital loss of limbs) to join the Society and to get immediate help and advice. The members of the Society often see themselves as part of a unique family and are very keen that their 'wheel of experience' is not constantly re-invented.
Meetings take place in accessible venues mainly in the Midlands for ease of access and occur 2/3 times yearly. One meeting is usually a telephone conference which takes place in either May or June. The post holder will also need to meet with the Company Secretary two or three times a year.
