The Autism Research Trust (2 trustees)
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability affecting 1 in 100 people in the UK. It is characterised by difficulties in the development of social relationships and communication skills, alongside unusually strong narrow interests, repetitive behaviour, and difficulties in coping with unexpected change. It remains poorly understood, despite the understanding of autism having developed a great deal over recent decades. However, there is still a large amount of work to be done. Research is vital, not just to understand the causes and effects of autism, but also to evaluate treatments and interventions to ensure that people affected by autism receive the best possible support.
The Autism Research Trust (ART) was set up in 2010 primarily to fund the cutting-edge research taking place at the Autism Research Centre in Cambridge University. As they grow they hope to extend this funding to other centres of excellence in the field of autism research. The Cambridge University Autism Research Centre is led by Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, an expert with more than 20 years of experience and an archive of book and media credits. Funding for research into autism remains very low in the UK relative to both the US and other areas of medical research. In addition, Simon and his team cannot access charitable support via pure academic research avenues. The purpose of the charity is to rectify these imbalances.
They have just finished their first year, during which they raised funding to start and develop the charity from very humble beginnings. The trustees have recently employed a part time manager to focus on a 12 month fundraising strategy.
To support this activity they are seeking applications from high calibre individuals to join the Board of Trustees. They are looking for people who will bring knowledge or experience in one or both of the following areas which will support the ART in its strategy for 2012:
Experience and contacts at senior level in the business / commercial sector.
Experience or knowledge of fundraising at a high level, more specifically in the areas of trust, individual or events fundraising.
Time Commitment:
The Board of Trustees meet 4 times a year in London. The trustees may be asked to support the manager in certain projects or areas where they have specialist skills.
Documentation:
A Person Specification can be found here and more information about the role can be found here.
How to apply:
If you think you have the experience and skills to help the Autism Research Trust please email ian.joseph@russam-gms.co.uk and copy emma.kynoch@russam-gms.co.uk and ensure you provide the following:
The closing date for applications is Monday 27th February. All applications will be forwarded on to the Autism Research Trust who will then take over the process.
Narcolepsy UK
Narcolepsy UK is the sole national charity for the 30,000 people with narcolepsy in the UK. More people in the UK have narcolepsy than Huntingdon’s.
In 2008 the charity were beneficiaries of two significant legacies. This created a one off income of over £200,000. The trustees employed an interim manager to work with them to construct a three year plan that they then put into action. This plan is now almost complete and the trustees are involving the members in the next delivery plan; due to be agreed by March 2012.
Narcolepsy UK has gone through a period of profound change. It now has one full time and two part time employees. Over the last two years they have changed name, become incorporated, applied for Scottish charity status, introduced free membership and created a good working relationship with the key clinical centres in the UK. In addition they “merged” with Narcolepsy Connections a second support service for people with narcolepsy. The website (www.narcolepsy.org.uk) is the most viewed narcolepsy site in the world, attracting over 2,500 unique visitors every month. A quarterly newsletter Catnap is sent to more than 700 individuals and of course sleep centres and neurological units.
The role:
The board of Narcolepsy UK, under its new constitution can have a trustee body of 12; seven of that body (including the Chair) must always be narcoleptic. At the moment the board stands at 10, with seven narcoleptics on the board and the remaining three related to narcoleptics. Each trustee is expected to attend at least four board meetings per year, the AGM, national conference and chair or sit on at least one sub-committee.
All trustees of Narcolepsy UK are also Directors of Narcolepsy UK Limited. The liability is set at £10. All trustees must complete an enhanced CRB check, confirm they are legally able to become a trustee of the charity and commit to the Nolan seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

World Society for the Protection of Animals (2 trustees)• Helping to create a global agenda for animal protection.
• Making animals matter – making them relevant to established global concerns.
• Bringing together advocates on common platforms – animal welfare and other sectors.
WSPA has had an extraordinary and successful decade that has seen them grow into one of the foremost international animal protection charities with offices in 15 countries, an operating budget of over $70 million and an unparalleled network of more than 1,000 organisations in 156 different countries. Their contacts and relations with policy makers are uniquely strong for an animal protection group, especially with organisations such as the World Organisation for Animal Health and the United Nations.
In 2011 WSPA responded to the floods in El Salvador and Thailand and the drought in Kenya; continued work to raise public awareness and influence policy through their Cage Free campaign in Canada, their Not in My Cuppa campaign in the UK and their Humane Chain campaign in Australia. As they move in to delivering their new five year Strategy their first new priority campaign aimed at eradicating the inhumane culling of millions of dogs - Red Collar – has already had a huge impact and caught the attention of key policymakers and the media worldwide. As well as a host of other projects, 2012 will see WSPA roll out new priority campaigns on disaster management and humane and sustainable agriculture as they look to end the suffering of billions animals in intensive farming across the world.
The roles:
WSPA would like to invite applications for two positions on its International Board which will arise over the next few months.
WSPA’s global work is overseen by its International Board responsible for providing vision and guidance to the management team and ensuring the charity is able to meet its objectives both now and in the future.
If you would like to use your skills and experience at Board level to help them realise their vision, we would very much like to hear from you.
Specifically WSPA are looking for people who will bring knowledge or experience in one or both of the following additional areas which will support WSPA in taking forward its current strategic objectives:
•
Experience and or contacts at a senior level in non-animal welfare fields which may overlap with WSPA’s and so support the delivery of its Strategy (e.g. development, environment, public health sectors) |
Time commitment:
Every trustee is expected to prepare for and participate in regular WSPA International Board meetings (currently three per annum, each lasting up to two days and held in London), and may also be asked to serve on a Board Committee.

The minimum time commitment is likely to amount to 12 days per year plus travel.
All WSPA trustee appointments are unpaid though travel and other out of pocket expenses will be paid for.

Action for Children (Trustee - Fundraising expertise)
Action for Children has been working with the UK’s most vulnerable children since 1869. Every year they help nearly 170,000 children, young people and families look forward to a brighter future through nearly 480 projects across the UK. They also promote social justice by lobbying and campaigning for change.
Studies suggest that up to 10% of all children in Britain are neglected. That's more than twice the number of children born in the UK in 2007. Action for Children is campaigning to improve the way child neglect is tackled, and highlighting the importance of intervening early to help families with emerging issues, before they become long-term problems. They are raising funds to make early intervention a reality on the ground.
Action for Children is encouraging governments to spend more - and more wisely - on public services that focus on early intervention, and raising desperately needed money to develop targeted, proven, effective initiatives that tackle the key causes of neglect. They work with thousands of vulnerable families already but there are many more families out there who need help.
Earlier this year, they launched My Action for Children, a new website which makes it easy and simple to donate to support children and young people in your own community, knowing exactly where your money will be going. They are the first UK children’s charity to offer this flexible and engaging way to help a service close to their heart or their home. To date, the website has raised £450k.
They have set themselves specific and challenging fundraising targets:
They will :
• increase net voluntary income |
To help with achieving these targets, they are seeking a high calibre individual who has a proven track record of achievement in income generation and an ability to demonstrate an awareness of fundraising techniques, approaches and strategies. This individual will join the main board of 15 trustees and be able to provide the rigour they require on fundraising matters.
The successful candidate will understand the challenge of fundraising in a charity where voluntary income is a small part of the total income of the charity. (Last year service income was c. £180m and voluntary income was c. £15m.) They must also appreciate the importance of integrating fundraising activities so that they are complementary to both service delivery and other communications.
